Dice games in various forms, have been played by humans. Ancient dice have been found in Egyptian tombs, Chinese burial chambers, and in remains from civilizations around the world.
Dice are simple and elegant gaming implements, available in a wide variety of sizes and colors, and made from a large assortment of materials. They're cheap, extremely portable, and familiar to almost everyone. Six-sided cubes are currently the most common form, but dice of other shapes and number of sides are also available. Dice are the main piece of equipment in a number of family games, as well as gambling games such as Craps. In addition, dice games are used in numerous board games such as Backgammon, Monopoly, and many more, bringing a necessary element of chance to game play.
Dice Games are educational in obvious ways, for example encouraging counting and numbers in little children and quick mental addition in older children. But they are also excellent at reinforcing the concept of taking turns, scoring, winning and losing gracefully, patience and so much more.
You probably have a number of interesting dice lurking in existing family games, and you can certainly pick up more very cheaply these days through stationers, discount stores, gaming shops, educational catalogues or garage sales. We have been known to buy an old board game for cents from a garage sale just to acquire its dice.
